Fashion inspiration: Wayuu luxury bags

What happens when the Fashion Industry gets its inspiration from aboriginal communities?

The Wayuu women in the North of Colombia and Venezuela have passed their knowledge for generations, the intricate patterns and weaving of Wayuu designs is the result of years of practice.

Reading on Sophie Anderson site we learnt that Sophie discovered these beautiful Wayuu bags in La Guajira, Colombia and decided to become a bag designer herself. She sells her designs on many shops including Net-a-Porter. Sophie writes her inspiration comes from the Wayuu designs.

However, the following humble ethical questions keep buzzing in our heads:

- Where to draw a line between inspiration and copy right issues?

- How to pay cash to aboriginal women that live outside our economy?

- Do the Wayuu women know some of their bags are sold at £420 in the UK, and also in: Australia, Austria, Africa, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, ,Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxemburg, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and the US under the brand name Sophie Anderson?

- Do all the indigenous communities from all over Colombia on Sophie Anderson's website know that their portraits have been used for commercial purposes?

- Shall we buy these bags directly from the Wayuu women?

- Does Colombian composer and singer Calixto Ochoa get royalty fees for the use of his music in Sophie Anderson website?

- Do the Wayuu people know that the "Wayuu" name is registered at the UK Office for Intellectual Property?
